Alan Davie (1920-2014) was a Scottish painter, printmaker, and jazz musician, celebrated for his vibrant, symbolic paintings influenced by Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and world mythologies. Born in Grangemouth, Scotland, he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and initially pursued jazz, which shaped his improvisational approach to art. His works often incorporate symbols and bold colors, inspired by Zen Buddhism, primitive art, and spirituality. Known for spontaneous, energetic compositions, Davie gained international recognition in the 1950s, exhibiting in major galleries like the Tate in London. He saw painting as a process of discovery, where meaning emerged naturally, setting him apart in post-war British art.…

Catalogue of exhibition held April 2-May 9, Gimpel Fils, London, May 25-June 30, Technical College, Barrow-in-Furness, May 25-June 30, the Brewery Arts Centre. Introduction: Michael Watt This publication coincides with installations by Andrea Fisher at GimpelFils gallery in London and in Barrow-in-Furness, and an exhibition of her work at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal. The difference between these locations introduces recurrent themes in her work: the rhetoric of powerthatconnectsthe heroic confidence of high modernism to the representation of mastery in war photography, and the cool pleasures of an aesthetic which can create an equal spectacle from both sleek beauty and horrifying conflict.…

Illustrated with two b&w reproductions of Fraser's works. Catalogue listing of 20 works. Donald Hamilton Fraser RA (1929 â" 2009), is famed for his abstract landscape paintings. In 1953, his premier solo exhibition was given at Gimpel Fils, London. Between 1953 and 1971 he had nine shows at Gimpel Filts, in 1967 at the Zurich-based Gimpel-Hanover Galerie, and Fraser even got eleven shows between 1958 and 1978 at the well known New York gallery, Paul Rosenberg. Carel Weight hired Fraser as a tutor at the Royal College of Art in 1958 where he continued until 1983. Fraser's students at the Royal included Patrick Caulfield, David Hockney, Ron B. Kitaj, and Thà rà se Oulton Gimpel Fils is a London art gallery previously located at 30 Davies Street in Westminster just off Grosvenor Square and has since moved. The gallery was founded by Charles and Peter Gimpel, sons of the celebrated Parisian art dealer, Renà Gimpel, author of the Diary of an Art Dealer. Throughout its history it has maintained a commitment to contemporary British and International art. Gimpel Fils was founded in November 1946. The first exhibition, Five Centuries of French Painting, was based on the small part of Renà Gimpel's collection that had been sent to London before the Second World War. The bulk of his stock was lost in Paris.[4]During the 1950s and 60s Gimpel Fils was highly influential in its association with the avant-garde. It supported modern British artists, including those of the St Ives School, as well as rising American artists and French abstract painters of the School of Paris. Gimpel Fils represented many of the major artists of the time, including Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson. Nicholson moved to Gimpel Fils from the Lefevre Gallery and stayed until the early 1960s. In supporting the next generation of artists emerging in this period it gave first exhibitions to Lynn Chadwick, Anthony Caro, Peter Lanyon and Alan Davie, while also being associated with a number of other British artists, including Louis le Brocquy, Ivon Hitchens, Gillian Ayres, Bernard Meadows, Kenneth Armitage and Robert Adams. From France Gimpel Fils represented the likes of Marie Laurencin, Pierre Soulages, Nicolas de Staël, Serge Poliakoff, Fahrelnissa Zeid, and Yves Klein, as well as working with American artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Willem de Kooning, Sam Francis and Larry Rivers, who had his first London exhibition at the gallery in 1962.…

An exhibition of artwork, letters, manuscripts, ad other memorabilia of this "prominent French art dealer, friend and patron of living artists and collector (1881 - 1945). His witty and acerbic Journal d'un Collectionneur, translated and published as Diary of an Art Dealer, are a primary source for the contemporary history of modern art and of collecting between the World Wars. Trained in the classic traditions of connoisseurship, a great admirer of Chardin, Gimpel had an instinctive sympathy for the modern contemporaries among whom he moved: Georges Braque, Mary Cassatt, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and above all, his intimate friend Marie Laurencin. The friend of Anatole France, and Marcel Proust in his last years, he had a selective high regard for many museum professionals." - Wikipedia. Quite scarce.
