Gilles Lorin sucht zunächst die Seele des Motivs mit seiner Kamera zu erfassen, bei einem Baum wie einer Buddha-Figur, einem Stilleben oder tatsächlich einer Person. Für ihn fängt dann aber der größere Teil der Arbeit an, der Alchemist und Printmaker verhilft dem Bild zu seiner optimalen Erscheinung, über viele Arbeitsgänge, in einer Dunkelkammer wie einem Labor. Und wo etwas unmöglich scheint, motiviert ihn das, aus Schwierigkeiten zieht er Inspiration und Energie. Und löst sie, auch wenn es Jahre dauert. Bis das Ergebnis seinen Ansprüchen genügt. Kennengelernt habe ich Gilles Lorin im Herbst 2014. Nach Stationen in London, wo Gilles als Experte für japanische Kunst und seine spätere Frau Jana im Print Department bei Christies beschäftigt waren, hatte es die Lorins 2001 in die USA verschlagen. Fast 15 Jahre im elterlichen Geschäft, dem Handel mit chinesischer Kunst und Antiquitäten, folgten. Zunächst und später in Florida, dazwischen in New Orleans. Zahllose Reisen nach Asien brachten Gilles hierbei auch die chinesische Kultur und Philosophie näher. Es war Hurrikan Katrina, der die Zeit der Lorins in New Orleans jäh beendete. Hier hatte Gilles sich während einer langwierigen und schwierigen Rekonvaleszenz nach einem Autounfall als eine Art Therapie intensiver mit der Photographie beschäftigt, mit allen Facetten. Von der geliebten Dunkelkammer und dem Erlernen alter Photoprozesse, von der Aufnahme bis zum Entwickeln. Wir trafen uns in New York. Die Lorins planten nach Europa zurückzukehren. 15 Jahre Amerika schienen genug. Angebote aus Brüssel und Paris, in sein altes Leben als Experte für asiatische Kunst zurückzukehren, stärkten diesen Entschluss. Zu klären war die Frage, ob eine Perspektive als Photograph und Künstler denkbar sei, und so bat mich Jana, die ich schon seit ihrer Zeit in London kannte, doch mal einen Blick auf einige Arbeiten ihres Mannes zu werfen, sie lege Wert auf mein Urteil. So hat es damals angefangen. Als ich Resilience und Faith (Seiten 14 und 15) in der Hand hielt, war mein erster Instinkt die will ich haben. Das waren keine Porträts sondern Statements von Charaktereigenschaften, in brillanter Qualität. Es passiert einem Profi nur höchst selten, dass er neue Bilder sieht, die ihn sprachlos machen. Jedenfalls ist das meine Reaktion gewesen. Zuletzt ging mir das so, als ich Jonas Burgerts erste Museumsausstellung in Tübingen sah. Und das Ist einige Zeit her. Die Frage, ob Gilles Arbeiten gut waren, stellte sich also nicht, nur die, wie wir helfen konnten bei seinem Start in die Umlaufbahn als Künstler. In unserer digitalen Welt bilden Photokünstler wie Gilles Lorin die große Ausnahme. Das klingt so banal, dass es Erklärung braucht. Gilles ist - mit sehr hohem Anspruch - seit vielen Jahren auf der Suche nach dem bestmöglichen Ergebnis, der maximalen Qualität des Abzugs auf dem für das jeweilige Sujet optimalen Papier. 15 Jahre des Experimentierens und Weiterentwickelns seiner Fähigkeiten haben ihn auf das Niveau gebracht, auf dem er heute arbeitet.
