This book tells the story of a scientific expedition to the island of Ascension in the South Atlantic, undertaken to solve one of the most fundamental questions in astronomy: how far away is the sun? The author recounts the fascinating history of attempts to measure the sun's distance, beginning with the ancient Greek astronomer Aristarchus and tracing the development of more sophisticated methods through the centuries. The book details the challenges encountered by astronomers throughout history, from technological limitations to political obstacles and even the unreliability of human perception. The author recounts his own experiences navigating these challenges, describing the trials of sea travel, the difficulties of setting up an observatory on a remote island, and the frustrations of dealing with unreliable weather conditions. The author also presents the broader historical and cultural context of this scientific quest, highlighting the role of international collaboration and competition in the advancement of knowledge. He explores the societal and scientific significance of accurate measurement and the human drive to understand the universe. This book provides a captivating glimpse into the world of astronomy, offering a unique blend of scientific inquiry, historical anecdote, and personal reflection. The authorââ â¢s vivid descriptions bring to life the difficulties and triumphs of measuring the sunââ â¢s distance, demonstrating how this seemingly abstract question has driven centuries of scientific inquiry and continues to inspire scientists today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Slight wear to extremities but otherwise a very good copy. 1880 and 1911 inscriptions on half title. Illustrated by map frontispiece and by table and figures in text. David Gill, later Sir David, (18431914), astronomer, was the eldest son of David Gill (17891878), a watchmaker with a well-established business in Aberdeen. He was educated at Dollar Academy and at Marischal College, Aberdeen, where he was inspired by the lectures of James Clerk Maxwell. He was apprenticed as a watchmaker and became a competent makers of watches and scientific equipment. At the age of twenty he became interested in astronomy and having equipped himself with instruments, some made by Gill, he came to the notice of astronomy professionals after taking some long-exposure astronomical photographs of the moon. In 1870 Gill married Isobel Sara (18491919). Two years later the opportunity came to devote his time exclusively to scientific pursuits when he undertook the management of a private observatory that Lord Lindsay was setting up on his country estate. After a not unsuccessful expedition to the island of Mauritius to observe the transit of Venus of December 1874 Gill undertook a further expedition to the island of Ascension in order to measure the distance of Mars in 1877, using the same techniques as he had used on Mauritius. On this expedition he was accompanied by his wife, who published this interesting account of their experience (the first edition was published 1878). The expedition was crowned with success, the sun's distance being determined with much greater accuracy than had previously been attained. The work earned for Gill the gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1882. Gill was later appointed Her Majesty's astronomer at the Cape of Good Hope, where he remained for 28 years. Gill, who was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1883 and created KCB in 1900.
