Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book details the legal battle over a land grant issued to Civil War veteran Henry Millspaugh. After his death, his brother and sister inherited the grant and hired Thomas C. and Milton McEwen to locate the land in Illinois. The McEwens obtained the land in their names in 1849, but… it was not until 1856 that they approached the heirs for quitclaim deeds to the property. The author argues that the McEwens took advantage of the heirs, most of whom were farmers with limited knowledge of the law, and misrepresented the value of the land in order to obtain the deeds for a fraction of its worth. The lawsuit brought by the heirs' descendants seeks to have the deeds declared invalid and the land returned to the Millspaugh family. This historical legal drama provides insight into the complexities of land law and the challenges faced by veterans and their families in the post-Civil War era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
