Cette période est marquée par des chocs successifs que sont le développement croissant du progrès technique et la séparation de l'Église et de l'État suite à la loi du 9 septembre 1905. Médecin des âmes, il est aussi un guérisseur des corps réputé dans le Loiret et au-delà. Il attire à Gy-les-Nonains de nombreux malades désireux de se faire soigner, parfois venant de très loin, et cela ne plaît pas à tout le monde. surtout pas au maire du village ! Cottance se lance également dans la préparation de remèdes qu'il compose lui-même, les Remèdes du Curé de Gy, une gamme de vingt-huit produits. Sirops, potions, pommades, guérissaient toutes sortes de maladies (aujourd'hui, le seul et unique produit subsistant est la Tisane de Santé Gy). Cette activité le conduit à quatre reprises devant le tribunal pour « exercice illégal de la médecine » suite à des dénonciations anonymes. A posteriori, il est surnommé le Don Camillo du Gâtinais en référence au personnage de curé créé par l'écrivain italien Giovanni Guareschi en 1948.
