The apparent stains, discoloration, early inscriptions, shelf marks, bookplates, labels and sketches visible within the facsimile are intentionally reproduced features of the original medieval manuscript and its subsequent provenance and are not condition defects in this copy. Publisher's Solander box also very well preserved, clean and structurally sound, with bright spine decoration and only negligible evidence, if any, of handling. No dust jackets, as issued. A particularly attractive, complete copy of this elaborate Folio Society manuscript facsimile. BACKGROUND: The Getty Apocalypse is a mid-thirteenth-century English illuminated manuscript of the Book of Revelation, produced circa 1255-1260 during one of the great periods of Gothic manuscript illumination in England. The work combines the biblical text of Revelation with the traditional medieval commentary attributed to Berengaudus, and is distinguished by an extensive sequence of vividly coloured miniatures depicting the visionary imagery of St John. The manuscript is now preserved in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, where it is catalogued as MS Ludwig III 1 (83.MC.72). Before entering the Getty collection it was well known as the Dyson Perrins Apocalypse, after the celebrated English collector C. W. Dyson Perrins, and it later passed through the collections of other important manuscript owners and dealers. The Folio Society's 2011 edition was conceived as a high-quality facsimile of the original manuscript, reproducing not only its illuminated pages but also many of its physical and historical characteristics. The accompanying commentary is by Nigel J. Morgan, a leading authority on English medieval illuminated manuscripts and Apocalypse cycles. The edition therefore appeals both as a finely produced collector's book and as a scholarly facsimile of an important surviving example of medieval English book art.…
