Johann Gottlieb Heineccius was a German jurist from Eisenberg, Thuringia. He studied theology at Leipzig and law at Halle. He was appointed professor of philosophy in 1713 and professor of jurisprudence in 1718. He endeavored to treat law as a rational science, and not merely as an empirical art whose rules had no deeper source than expediency. Thus he continually refers to first principles, and he develops his legal doctrines as a system of philosophy. COLH1743ABFA.

Der ehemalige Benediktinermönch war der erste gewesen, der katholische Theologie auf der Grundlage der Wolffschen Philosophie gelehrt hatte. 1751 war er in einem Aufsehen erregenden Schritt zur evangelischen Kirche übergetreten und lehrte seitdem in Helmstedt. Er starb erst 34jährig in Göttingen. "Die Universität Göttingen, insbesondere Prof. Ribow, der ebenfalls Wolffianer war, sorgten für ein ehrenvolles Begräbnis, dessen Kosten der Herzog übernahm; zugleich ließ man zum Gedächtnis Rothfischers ein von J.
