The two volumes provide a short history and checklist (with revisions) of this short-lived California press, which was founded by Glenn Schaefer, a book collector and head of the Security Title Insurance and Guarantee Company of Los Angeles. Ward Ritchie writes in the Foreward to the main volume that "But for the untimely death of Glenn Schaefer soon after the press' inception.the San Pasqual Press might have become the premier publishing house of the West. The few books they did publish were outstanding trade publications, well-chosen and well-designed.".

Selected Shore Plants of Southern California is a lovely tribute to the flowering plants of the California coast. In the preface, Richardson writes ÒI do not believe that plants hold the keys to understanding the universe [É] There is something in humanity, however, beyond our gastronomical appreciation, which wonders in them and their flowers, stems, leaves and forms.Ó He later explains that flowers and oceans donÕt often mix, because of the salty water. So, flowers on the coast Òmost resemble and are biologically closest to plants of the most arid regions, the interior deserts.Ó The book moves through 16 coastal flowers, with a description and a colorful print for each one.
