The author, Philippe Halsman (Latvian: Filips Halsmans, German: Philipp Halsmann; 2 May 1906 Riga, Russian Empire, now Latvia - 25 June 1979 New York City) was a great American portrait photographer with a fascinating life story, which you can find online. The translated Ben-Zion Tomer, who was born with the last neme Teitlebaum, was born in Bilgori, Poland. WHen WWII broke the family fled to Russia, was exiled to Siberia, fled to Samarkand where he lived in an orphanage. He published his first poem in Russian at age 11. At age 12 he was transferred to Teheran and reached Eretz Israel in February 1943 in the "Teheran Children Immigration." At age 16 he published his first poem in Hebrew. h was one of the founders of Kibbutz Revadim, was in the Palmach in Gush Etzion, was captured by the Jordanian Legion in May 1948. After his release he studied literature and philosophy at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He published various books of poetry, was Israel's cultural attached in Brazil, Yigal Alon's advisor, was involved in the theatre in Israel, translated from the Russian and was very prolific in his literary output.

Begins: 'Dear Princess Charlotte. | May I venture to ask Your Royal Highness's acceptance of a small wedding present from my husband and myself with our most sincere and heartfelt good wishes for Your Royal Highness's future happiness and prosperity.' The present is 'the newest style of Minton's china and this is the first specimen of the kind'. She concludes in conventional style. Beneath the signature, in a contemporary hand (that of the Princess?): 'Lady Ampthill the Wife of the Late Ambassador in Berlin.' The recipient Princess Charlotte of Prussia (Viktoria Elisabeth Auguste Charlotte), married her second cousin Bernhard III of Saxe-Meiningen in 1878, becoming his Duchess Consort. She was a daughter of the Hohenzollern Prince Frederick of Prussia, and through her mother Victoria, Princess Royal, she was the eldest granddaughter of the British monarch Queen Victoria and her consort Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

TWO: Half-length portrait, apparently from the same shoot as One, with autograph signature. 8 x 11 cm. Written on reverse: 'HECKINGEN. / SEP. 7. 1951'. Same outfit as One, but with cigarette in right hand. Inscribed around the head: 'James Dandy / Crownprince Wilhelm'. THREE: View of Hechingen Castle. 8.5 x 13 cm. Typed message on reverse, dated 'Hechingen. / im Mai 1951.', 'Herzlichen Dank für das treue Gedenken und die guten Wünsche zu meinem Geburtstag.' Although Wilhelm's birthday was indeed in May, the signature to this note is not his. A fourth item (in good condition, lightly aged) is a card with a printed new year's message from 'Stuttgart-Frauenkopf, January 1954'. An autograph note in English, with the same signature as Item Three, reads: 'With kind thoughts and thanking you for the bulbs'.
