Very good. - A 3-1/8 inch high by 4-12 inch wide cover from a letter addressed to Princess Mary "Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Gloucester". Possibly addressed in Maunchhausen's hand. He has signed "Munchhausen" at lower left and his wax seal, embossed with his crest, has been clipped and mounted at the bottom. The letter's cover is mounted onto 4 inch high by 5 inch wide paper clipped from an album. Very good. The German jurist and diplomat Borries Wilhelm von Munchhausen (1794-1849) was the Royal Hanoverian envoy to the Kingdom of Prussia, the Kingdom of Saxony as well as to the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland. His studies of law at the University of Gottingen were interrupted by the start of the 1813 Wars of Liberation. Munchhausen volunteered with Carl von Beaulieu-Marconnay's Jager Battalion and was soon promoted to first lieutenent. He resumed his studies at the University of Heidelberg and at the University of Gottinghem. After being employed as auditor at the Royal Chancellery of Justice, he was appointed assessor and subsequently elected as Justice Councilor in Gottingen in 1820. Entrusted with the legal expedition of the Domain Chamber in 1826, he was summoned by the British King George IV to the German Chancellery in London and appointed Privy Cabinet Councilor. He continued under William IV's reign following George IV's death. He was recalled in 1831 and appointed Hanover's Envoy Extraordinaire and Minister Plenipotentiary to Berlin and Dresden by King William IV. He participated in the coronation parade of Victoria to Westminster Abbey in 1837. Queen Victoria's aunt, Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh (1776-1857) was the fourth daughter of King George III. Mary married her first cousin Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh when they were both 40 years old though she went on to outlive him. She saw her niece, Queen Victoria, ascend to the throne and was the longest living of George III's children.…
