British journalist Yorke travelled widely in China between 1930 and 1932, as a correspondent for Reuters reporting on the momentous events that were occurring at that time. Despite his relatively short stay in China, the extent of his travels and the intensity of his focus on understanding China, the Chinese, their politics and religions resulted in this valuable account of the times. Travelling by pony, rail, bus, sampan and on foot, Yorke's first-hand account acquaints the reader with the struggles between the Communist and Nationalist forces, as well as the conditions of day-to-day life that the Chinese endured. Following Yorke's return to Britain he played an important role in the popularization of Buddhism in the English speaking world. Spine a little darkened; binding firm. Small brown stains on the front edges of a few front and rear pages, not affecting text. Remainder of pages clean and unmarked. 334 pp., 8 b&w photos, 1 col. fold-out map, bibliography.
