Portal was at this time Second Secretary at the Consulate General in Cairo, headed by Evelyn Baring. He was sent on a dangerous mission to mediate between King John of Abyssinia and the Italian Government following the killing of Italian troops at Dogali in 1887. This document, compiling 74 pieces of correspondence and reports dated 8 July 1887 to 23 Jan 1888, covers unfolding events relating to the justification, preparation, conduct and aftermath of his mission. Portal's own published account (My Mission to Abyssinia) followed in 1892.
