Marjorie Dakin Arkelian's biographical essay traces Hill's career from his birth in Birmingham, England, through his apprenticeships in Massachusetts and his European study, to his decades in California where he became, with Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran, one of the defining painters of the American West.
