VOLUME II ONLY of a two volume set. Poor condition. Second edition (as stated upon title page). [4], 388 pages. Hardcover; H 20.75cm x L 13cm. Original boards; brown cloth covering mostly missing from the soiled and stained front board, most of spine cloth lacking as remnant stub attached along front joint still retains some gilt title lettering, spine's underlying backstrip intact save for shallow chipping at ends, rear board's original dark brown cloth intact but with mild staining, wear along all board edges with corners bumped. Aforementioned spine damage has caused associated weakness to joints/hinges. Heavy soiling to edges but interior leaves are comparatively quite clean with mild toning and only occasional light foxing spots. Past owner's signature in pencil on front free endpaper. Features English translations of two plays ("Zriny" and "Rosamond") and four prose tales ("The Journey to Schandau," "Hans Heiling's Rocks," "Woldemar," and "The Harp") by German dramatist, poet, author, and soldier Carl Theodor KÃ rner with an introductory essay titled "Remarks on the Tragedy of Zriny" presumably by translator George Fleming Richardson. Erratum on page 388. Korner (1791-1813) was a young adjutant in the Lutzow Free Corps during the Napoleonic Wars and died at the young age of 21 after action near Rosenberg, Germany. His various tragedy plays, operas, farces, and poems were collected and edited by his father Christian Gottfried Korner and first published at Leipzig in 1815. His father's biographical essay regarding his son appears in Volume I and not this stray copy of Volume II.
