This copy comes from the library of Sir Clive Coates of Helperby (1871-1979), with his signature - "Clive Coates of Helperby" - on the front end paper. 1931 1st edition (stated); Harper & Co.; London. The original softcover booklet has been custom-bound into hardcovers with "CC" (presumably the initials for "Clive Coates") gilt stamped on the front cover, and a "CC" label affixed to the front pastedown. Coates was Captain of the 15th/19th Hussars in World War I, and attained the title of 2nd Baronet (below a Baron, but above a Knight) in 1921. The booklet has 31 numbered pages and contains illustrations. The book is smaller in size - it measures 6 1/4" tall x 5" wide. Here are some examples of the contents: The Origin of Wine; Madeira; How, When and What to Drink; Claret; The Art of Drinking; Champagne; Sherry; Bordeaux White Wines; How and When to Drink Port; Moselle.and more. The Foreword notes that this book aims at "providing the public with a non-technical guide to the art of wine drinking." First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the writer of the foreword, "Ernest Cockburn, with the best wishes, thanks and appreciation of the author of this humble work, Geoff M. Tait. 2.9.36." The recipient (1889-1945) was a partner in the family firm Cockburn, Smithes & Co., one of the world's leading port houses. Above the inscription (on the front free endpaper) is a second, which reads, "Dear Ernest, Please accept this copy with my love and best wishes, Geoff." After Cockburn's death, the copy passed to Frederick Armine Cockburn (1902-1981), a chairman of the firm and, for the year 1959-60, master of the Worshipful Company of Distillers. His book label is on the front pastedown. Small octavo. Half-tone frontispiece, 10 half-tone plates. Original red diaper-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover lettered in gilt within blind panel. Mid-century pencilled annotations and under- and sidelining on first 20 pp. of text.
