Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition/Limited. Hardcover, 1st Edition (Limited) Number 51 of 500 Ray Russell Books Rochester MI 171 pages plus 24 pages on Battery D (short org history and member roster). Near Fine in a VG DJ. Blue cloth boards with gilt titles - corners sharp. Mino…r shelf/edge wear, mild age-toning and a few small closed tears to DJ - now in mylar. From the DJ: Collection of almost one hundred letters written by Harry Bartlett while serving with Battery D, 1st. Michigan Light Artillery. The letters weave a personal history and add to the fabric of American History as they are placed in context by a carefully researched narrative. Because the records of Battery D's first eighteen months of service were lost, this is the first documented account of that unit's role in the war from its formation in the fall of 1861 to the summer of 1863. Harold J. Bartlett of Clarkston, Michigan was the saddler of Battery D. The are not overblown, self~exalting documents intended for posterity. They were not written with the benefit of hindsight like so many wartime memoirs. These are candid recordings of a soldier's daily experience. Harry often reports on the food he eats, the places he sleeps, how his friends are faring and what they do to maintain their sanity during long hours of inactivity in camp. Skirmishes and major battles are described, and he presents in simple, honest terms the devastating power of war. Scarce. Highly Recommended. LOC SSS-25.

It is a collection of almost one hundred letters written by Harry Bartlett while serving with Battery D, 1st. Enlisting on September 10, 1861, he served for three long years without a single opportunity to visit home. He participated in or was present at several important battles including Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Hoover's Gap, Chickamauga and Chattanooga. Harry's letters reflect a perceptive, well educated young man. They express the strong sense of devotion to home and family that made this war so bitter. They are poignant examples of the loneliness and yearning felt by soldiers of every war. His dry humor and careful descriptive writing bring color to familiar black and white photographs of the Civil War. Correspondence to his wife, Rose, became an important part of Harry's daily routine. It anchored him to "the loved ones at home" and it brought a sense of order and comfort to military life fraught with uncertainty, boredom and occasional horror. The letters reflect a man maturing. During the long hours of waiting for the battery's time to fight, Harry's letter~writing helped him gain a clear perspective on the war and on his role as soldier, husband and father. They are not overblown, self~exalting documents intended for posterity. To the Sound of Musketry and Tap of the Drum is a character study that will bring to life this period of American history for any reader. For the serious student. it is a valuable addition of original material to the library of Civil War literature. Finally, it fills a void in Michigan Civil War history by providing the first account of Battery D.
