Ramel (1768-1815), who had risen through the ranks of the French army to become Guard of the Legislature, gives his account, of the coup attempt of 18 Fructidor (1797), his arrest and exile to the penal colony in Guiana, conditions while there, and his escape; Ramel eventually returned to France, rejoined the army and fought through the various Napoleonic campaigns, until his assassination in 1815 for suspected Loyalist sympathies. Contemporary mottled calf (some wear at head of spine, and along edges and corners), boards framed with an ornamental gilt rule, spine gilt with rues and ornaments, leather spine label, marbled boards. The composer was music director in the service of Mad. de Pompadour ( for her theatre '' Théâtre des Petits-Cabinets ''. He later became also tutor for harp music to queen Marie-Antoinette.
