Paperback. Condición: New. Sir William Gell (1777-1836) was a British archaeologist known for his drawings of sites and objects of classical interest. Noting that from the beginning of the excavations at Pompeii in 1748 'to the present day, no [substantial] work has appeared in the English language upon the subject of its domest…ic antiquities', together with architect and fellow countryman John P. Gandy he first published Pompeiana to help detail important findings that had been made by the excavators in the first two decades of the nineteenth century. To this end they provide historical discussion, analysis, and over 75 plates illustrating various points of archaeological interest including, as their subtitle notes, 'the topography, edifices, and ornaments of Pompeii'. Pompeiana is an important work that helped open the excavations to English readers and created further awareness of the treasures of the doomed city, destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.

In fine matching contemporary bindngs of full calf, double gilt ruled borders, the spines with raised bands, gilt compartments, each with brown and black lettering pieces. There is some dark staining to the top or bottom of the boards, just showing on the spines but which remain attractive on the shelves nevertheless. Spine bases slight wear.Some scattered spots but generally a clean set internally. The joints and hinges are al secure and all boards are fully attached. Overall a G-Nr VG set.

First Edition of the first definitive work on Pompeii in English, by the British classical archeologist William Gell in collaboration with British architect J. P. Gandy. "Despite the importance of Pompeii, and the fact that excavations had been going on for half a century, no authoritative account of the site was presented to English readers until 1817 when Gell published Pompeiana . . . Gell prepared the illustrations for Pompeiana on site with the camera lucida, an instrument that enabled the draftsman to trace an image onto paper, thereby controlling scale and dimension. John Peter Gandy, who had accompanied Gell on the Ionian Expedition, wrote most of the text but with reliance on Gell's research. Pompeiana was beautifully printed and heavily illustrated with high-quality engravings and numerous vignettes, mostly from Gell's drawings. Gandy did his literary work well but Pompeiana's value lies primarily in its illustrations, which are organized topographically so that the reader seems to stroll down a Pompeian street, looking into various houses along the way . . . Besides being a scholarly landmark, Pompeiana provided a rich source for the decorative arts at a time when classical motifs were much in vogue" (J.
