Sans avoir reç…u de formation à proprement parler, il embrasse la profession de photographe après s'être essayé, sans grand succès, à divers métiers. Atget commence à prendre des photographies vers 1888. Au début, il cherche à rassembler des paysages et des motifs, puis des images de rues parisiennes, pour les vendre à des artistes à titre de modèles. Rapidement, il élargit sa clientèle. Parmi ses acheteurs habituels figurent peintres, illustrateurs et artisans, collectionneurs, amateurs d'histoire et d'art et, finalement, de nombreuses institutions comme le musée Carnavalet ou la Bibliothèque nationale. Atget appelle ses photographies des " documents pour artistes " sans jamais revendiquer pour lui-même la moindre ambition artistique. Atget photographiait le vieux Paris, c'est-à-dire les quartiers épargnés par le vaste chantier de rénovation urbaine que le baron Haussmann avait lancé dans les années 1850. Il prenait des vues des rues et des façades aux heures les plus favorables, quand il n'y avait quasiment personne alentour, employant un appareil à plaques de 18 x 24 cm, qui garantissait un excellent rendu des détails d'architecture les plus infimes. On peut considérer que ses oeuvres marquent les origines de la photographie " documentaire " du XXe siècle, et donc de tout le débat sur la subjectivité inhérente à la photographie. Ces images et leur réception jouent un rôle capital dans l'histoire de la photographie de ce siècle. Mais c'est son extraordinaire modernité qui, dès les années 1930, retient l'attention de Walter Benjamin et inspire des photographes comme Man Ray, Berenice Abbott ou Walker Evans.
