Barclay's popular royalist historical allegory, which was admired both for its style and polemic by the likes of Cowper, Cardinal Richelieu, Fenelon and Leibnitz, was originally posthumously published in Paris in Latin in 1621, and following the loss of Ben Johnson's translation (commissioned by James I) due to a fire, was finally published in English in 1625. Further vernacular language versions rapidly followed, including this edition, which Gabriel de Corral translated from the Paris second edition. Corral was himself a highly regarded literary figure and prominent member of the Academia Poética in Madrid, as were Lope de Vega and Anastasio Pantaleon de Ribera, who contributed a prologue to this edition. (DNB; Lowndes 112). Scarce: Worldcat cites 5 copies (British Library, Duke University, Thomas Fisher Library, Universitat Rovira, Eberhard Karls Universitat). (Palau 24084).
