The words to this song appear as "Bow Low, Mary" (with slight variation) in Thomas Wentworth Higginson's 1867 article for The Atlantic Monthly titled "Negro Spirituals." Higginson was a Union officer during the American Civil War and a fervent abolitionist. In 1867, he wrote the article for The Atlantic Monthly in which he documented the songs sung by the African American soldiers in the First South Carolina Volunteers, a regiment he commanded. Higginson's article is one of the earliest written accounts of Negro spirituals, and it played a significant role in bringing these songs to the attention of a broader audience. He desribed the song as "very graceful and lyrical, and with more variety of rhythm than usual." The lyrics are: Sail, O Sail, O brudder! Sail, O believer! Sail over yonder.
