White paper covers soiled; fore-edge margin tear to rear cover; scuffing to spine paper; foldout front cover retains original subscriber's worn mailing label which is partially placed over flowing blond hair of naked woman on a swing by George Lois (additional risqué color illustrations by Lois on pages 108-109). Features contributions "Yo-Yo Power" by Abbie Hoffman (pages 106-107, 174, 176), "High, Wide, and Handsome" by Bruce Jay Friedman (pages 126, 170, 172, 174), "The Bombing of Joe Bonanno" by Gay Talese (pages 140-147, 152-153, 228, 234-238), and, most significantly "The Song of Grendel" by John Gardner (pages 138-139, 180, 182, 184, 186, 189-190, 194, 196) with the author's boldly written blue ink signature "John Gardner" at the top of page 139. Gardner's novel "Grendel" was published on August 12, 1971. Acquired from the estate of Dr. Curtis Carson Holloman Jr. (1939-1991) who served on the English Department faculty at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, Mississippi. Holloman's impressive collection of twentieth century American first edition literature included many books signed at events held at the University of Mississippi in Oxford but, as an online search did not reveal any Gardner-attended Ole Miss lectures/symposia, the author's signature may have been obtained in nearby Memphis or New Orleans where Gardner events occurred in 1980.
