A.W.Reed, the editor, has drawn the material from Agas's Savage Life and Scenes and from The New Zealanders Illustrated, so that we know the thoughts and impressions that were passing through the artist's mind as he committed his visual observations to the pages of his sketchbook and his canvases. Together Maori Scenes and Portraits and Early Paintings of the Maori represent a unique insight into New Zealand's early history. **Both books and jackets are in lovely condition EXCEPT for the name of the previous owner being stamped on the half-title page . Añadir al carritoHardcover. 3/4 leather, marbled paper-covered boards with marbled endpapers. T.e.g., [4], xx, [4], [1]- 642 pp., profusely illustrated including 2 color chromolithographs, several color folding reproductions, at least one bw engraved lithograph and hundreds of wood engravings. A massive single volume edition of this publication, more frequently seen as two-volumes. Bears the bookplate of renowned English Architect Edward Blove. Online research indicates "Blore is most notable for his completion of John Nash's design of Buckingham Palace, following Nash's dismissal. He completed the palace in a style similar to but plainer than that intended by Nash. In 1847, Blore returned to the palace and designed the great facade facing The Mall thus enclosing the central quadrangle. He also worked on St James's Palace in London, and a large number of other designs in both England and Scotland, including restoring the Salisbury Tower at Windsor Castle." Fair only. Entire casing separated from the text block and marbled endpapers loose. Scattered foxing to some leaves and the chromolithographed plates. Sold as a reading, or reference copy only.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Hardcover. This handsome and rather uncommon set of fairy tales was published as a limited edition of 2500 copies. However, these three volumes are identified by a blind stamp on the colophon stating that they are "One of 15 copies for presentation out of series." Each of the volumes has the initials JH as the copy number, and the bookplate of Jean Hersholt is present in each volume. Dick Whittington is also signed by Hersholt and its illustrator Robert Lawson. Hersholt, perhaps best known for his role as Shirley Temple's grandfather in Heidi (1937), appeared in over one hundred films, directed several films, won a Golden Globe Award, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He was also an eminent collector of books by Hans Christian Andersen and translated many of Andersen's fairy tales into English. Each volume is hardbound in cloth with a decorative ornament and title on the cover and title to spine. Beauty is bound in blue, Dick Whittington in orange, and Saint George in pale blue-gray. The volumes are in near fine condition save for a very light musty smell and a small stain to the margin along last page of text in Beauty. They have the original glassine jackets with minor chipping and wrinkling. The books are housed in a red paper covered slipcase. The slipcase is a bit rubbed, and has a faded half-inch streak along the front edge. Jackets and slipcase are in very good condition. Books measure 8 x 12 inches. Beauty: 45 pages; Dick Whittington: 37 pages; Saint George: 76 pages. CHILD/103023. Signed.
