Lecomte, probably an administrator at the Paris Opera, complaining about a new payment scheme and asking for an "exception in his favour" such as had previously been granted to the dancer Auguste Vestris: "En entrant à l'Opéra, je me flattais, qu'un jour, par mon service et mon travail, je pourrais parvenir à jouir des mêmes avantages que mes prédécesseurs. Mon attente a été trompée, et de nouveaux reglemens sont venus détruire mes espérances et les prerogatives auxquelles j'avais peut-être droit de prétendre à mon tour. Ce sont ces nouveaux reglemens que l'on oppose sans cesse, aux réclamations que je fais pour obtenir une augmentation de feux. Ne serait il donc pas possible de faire une exception en ma faveur, comme on en fit une pour Vestris, qui avait un feu double lorsqu'il dansait dans deux ouvrages? Je ne demande pas la même faveur, mais dumoins [!] je désirerais beaucoup que mes feux fussent portés à la somme de cinquante francs, si non toutes les fois que je danseras, du moins toutes les fois que je jouerais un Ballet d'action. Ce terme moyen que j'ai l'honneur de vous proposer me semble juste et je me flatte, Monsieur le Comte, qu'il vous paraîtra tel quand vous y aurez réfléchi [.]". - Albert had a difficult relationship with the Paris Opera. He first joined its ballet company in 1808 on the recommendation of Auguste Vestris, but was soon fired by the controversial ballet master Pierre Gardel. As few engagements were to be had in Paris, Albert toured Europe successfully during the following years. After rising to the rank of a ballet master at the Paris Opera in the 1820s, Albert was definitely removed from the company in 1831. From 1838 to 1840, Albert served as ballet master to the Brussels Théâtre de la Monnaie. - With recipient's notes in pencil and ink. Insignificant browning and somewhat creased.

With the death of Sergei Diaghilev and the demise of the Ballet Russes, Serge Lifar became director and choreographer with the Paris Ballet, but after WWII he was accused of having been a collaborator with the German occupiers and was forced into retirement.
