Its numerous illustrations, diagrams, and architectural drawings will be of enormous use to students on every level and to admirers of buildings and architectural design. In photographs, ground plans, and well~chosen details, some 450 structures and building sites may be understood in their entirety. The illustrative material has been drawn from the best sources all over the world, including Central and South America, Africa, and the Orient. Structures from these areas, as well as from others more familiar, are illustrated in recent and excellent photographs. All the ground plans and elevations have been meticulously provided with directional arrows, and scales in feet and in meters. The captions and the index have been prepared with an eye to the multiple uses of this book, as a reference for the interested reader or as an aid to professional study. Five distinguished essays on the major architectural epochs greatly enrich this edition of Key Monuments of the History of Architecture. A glossary and a series of explanatory diagrams of basic structural systems will also amplify the reader's understanding of text and illustrations. This volume is the joint effort of two brilliant young architectural historians: Dr. Millon is Assistant Professor, School of Architecture and Planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Dr. Frazer is Assistant Professor, Department of Art, Vassar College. In its fresh choice of architectural examples and its vivid writing, the book presents the most recent outlook on architectural history. Today, buildings once thought inaccessible are becoming familiar to everyone, and the student of architecture will find examples here from all over the world for his study and inspiration.

Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 2 volumes ( xxi, 244; v, 88 pp. of plates) ; illustrated with numerous photographs and plates ; 32 cm. ; ISBN: 0691099227; 9780691099224 LCCN: 58-8985 ; LC: DF261.S3 ; OCLC: 26595012 ; red cloth with gold letering and designs, in faux parchment dust jackets ; two spots on dustjacket of volume 1 ; Contents: [1] Text -- [2] Plates. ; "The Sanctuary of the Great Gods on the island of Samothrace was a renowned center of religious life in the eastern Mediterranean from the seventh century B.C. until the fourth century of the Christian era, and the mysteries practiced there rank in age and historical importance with those of Eleusis. Volume 10 of the records of the Samothrace excavations focuses on the elaborate Propylon dedicated by Ptolemy II , which was, from early Hellenistic times, the entrance to the Sanctuary. Among ancient Greek gatehouses, only the Propylaia of the Athenian Akropolis matched the Samothracian Propylon in precipitousness of site and number of unusual features. The P ropylon was a large, marble, temple-like building--amphiprostyle and hexastyle. Its massive substructure was penetrated by a wide, vaulted tunnel, through which flowed the waters of the torrent that formed the Sanctuary's eastern boundary. This courageous feat of Hellenistic engineering had its counterpart in the artistic audacity of the superstructure, which exhibited an Ionic facade facing the road from the city of Samothrace and a Corinthian facade facing the causeway between the Propylon and the sacred precinct. The narrow stairway to the building's attic suggests that the Propylon may have had a role in the mystery cult's liturgy" ; FINE/G (v.1) ; FINE/FINE (v.2). Book.

Añadir al carrito3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged, with two fold lines. Thin strip of stub from mount adhering to one edge. The subject of the letter is Frazer's obituary of 'the Rev. Lorimer Fison and Dr. A. W.Howitt' (their deaths being 'two heavy losses' suffered by 'Australian anthropology in particular'), published in Folklore, Vol. 20, No. 2 (Jun. 30, 1909), pp. 144-180. Frazer begins by thanking Wright 'for the copy of my article which you have succeeded in wringing from the clutches of young Mr Nutt', i.e. the publisher of 'Folklore' Alfred Nutt (himself a folklorist). Frazer complains that Nutt 'ought to know how to spell my name, as it has been in the books of his Father's firm [David Nutt & Co] since before he (I mean the son) was born'. He hopes 'the other copies will follow', and thanks Wright for his 'heroic exertions in grappling with the firm of Nutt, Father and Son'. He needs three or four more copies 'to supply the Fison family', and may be forced to 'buy complete copies of the number'. He is leaving Cambridge for 'a long holiday on the Continent', and wishes he 'could have been able to let Mrs Potts have the copies' before leaving. In a postscript he instructs Wright to send 'the other copies of the article' to 'Mrs Potts, 14 Brookside, Cambridge', Mrs Potts being 'Mr Fison's sister'. Mrs Potts 'will forward the articles to Mr Fison's family in Australia'. From the distinguished autograph collection of Richard Hunter, son of Ida Macalpine, whose collection of 7000 books relating to psychiatry is in Cambridge University Library. Macalpine and Hunter had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.
