Paperback. Condición: Very Good. From the way we dress to the way we are treated by our peers, gender is a crucial part of our identity which is threaded into every aspect of our lives. In this fascinating introduction, Franklin first discusses the effects of gender identity on behaviour before then exploring the theoretical perspectives on why these differences occur. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: New. This is the second book in an ongoing trilogy about the military career of a remarkable soldier and officer. The first book, "To the Last Man!" Kulbes' Mongrels at the Chosin Reservoir, described D Company of the 10th Combat Engineers during the icy ordeal at the Chosin Reservoir and their against-all-odds withdrawal to Pusan.During the month of November 1950, 350,000 Chinese troops quietly joined forces with a nearly defeated North Korean People's Army. On November 28, the two armies initiated a surprise counter-attack against combined South Korean, American, and United Nations' forces so confident of victory that their northern advance had been labeled the "Home By Christmas Offensive." The undetected build-up of forces in those snowy peaks and canyons was a remarkable military feat. Equally remarkable was the subsequent defense and evacuation from Hungnam to Pusan by the 7th and 5th Marines, to which Kulbes' Mongrels had been temporarily attached.By the time the Mongrels arrived at Hamhung, inside the perimeter held by General Soule's Third Division, they had suffered more than 50% casualties. Their daily reports had been lost in the chaos of battle, however, and for too long, they were not recognized for their role at the Chosin. Their status as a temporarily "lost" company, combined with their cocky attitude, created ongoing friction with headquarters. As a result, they were assigned to demolition of docks and ordnance and had to watch as units they had fought alongside debarked for the security of Pusan. In reality, that assignment was probably both a punishment for their cocky attitude as well as recognition of their notable efficiency as combat engineers. "War Dawgs" was General Soule's nickname for the Mongrels.…

E. B. Griffin calls it "a modern classic of military history." Douglas Brinkley says it reads "like a John le Carre thriller." Stephen Coonts finds it a "first~person account of heroism, resolve, and ultimate triumph that will touch every American." It is all of that, and more. The Secrets of Inchon is a remarkable story of heroism and courage, only now come to light after fifty years: the true account of Navy Commander (then Lieutenant) Eugene Franklin Clark~a man, according to his colleagues, with "the nerves of a burglar and the flair of a Barbary Coast pirate" ~and the daring covert mission that helped change the course of the Korean War. In the year 2000, historian Thomas Fleming published an article about a crucial but little~known mission of the Korean War, led by a thirty~nine~year~old Navy lieutenant named Eugene Clark. After it appeared, Clark's widow told Fleming that her husband had written up his own account, which was now in a safe~deposit box. Would he like to read it? Fleming would and when he did, he discovered an extraordinary document: a vividly written first~person chronicle, filled with color, detail, and event, as honest and revealing a wartime narrative as he'd read in many years. In late August 1950, with North Korea on the attack, General Douglas MacArthur battled his own colleagues over his plan to invade Inchon, behind enemy lines. They simply knew too little about the dangerous tides and miles of mudflats, beaches, seawalls, and fortifications. It was suicide, they said. MacArthur convinced them, barely, and then brought in Clark, because they were right: they did know too little. Clark had to find the answers~and do it in only two weeks, because that was all the time there was. With two South Korean officers, Clark landed on a harbor island and set to work, but the North Koreans discovered him, and soon his intelligence gathering became filled with firefights, night raids, hand~to~hand combat, even a miniature naval battle involving armed junks. It all culminated on the night of the invasion itself~when he and his men took over a lighthouse to guide the allied fleet in. Clark's is a stunning account, rich with both adventure and humanity, infused by his growing brotherhood with his newfound allies~indeed, "a modern classic of military history." Eugene Clark served in the Navy during World War II, and after the war, among other assignments, was attached to General Douglas MacArthur's G~2 (intelligence) staff in Tokyo. He was there when the Korean War began, and was approached for the Inchon mission. For his role in the invasion, he won the Silver Star, and the Far Eastern Command added the Legion of Merit for "exceptionally meritorious conduct." Later missions resulted in an Oak Leaf Cluster and the Navy Cross. Clark died in 1998, after retiring from the Navy in 1966 with the rank of commander.…
