El éxito y difusión inicial de la crónica de guerra de Frank Pitcairn se debe en gran medida al interés que esta contienda suscitó fuera de las fronteras españolas, pero también al esfuerzo de los distintos partidos comunistas en Europa por recabar apoyo para el gobierno de la República, lo que les llevó a promover su traducción y edición fuera del Reino Unido. Valentine Ackland, poeta y ferviente defensora de la causa de la República, auguró en su día que el libro de Pitcairn se convertiría en un referente para los historiadores sobre la guerra de España 1936.
