His father was a merchant, he worked in the oil field in Pennsylvania. At the age of 12, Franck studied for two years at the Peekskill Military Academy. At 17, his father gave him a small rotary. With his brother Henry, they created the newspaper The Rose Lawn Home Journal, then The Stamp Collector, and later they publish stamps. At 20, he published a monthly, The Poultry Record. In 1886, at the age of 30, he published his first novel, The Book of the Hamburgs: A Brief Treatise upon the Mating, Rearing, and Management of the Different Varieties of Hamburgs .
