Nach seinem Weggang aus dem Leipzig Institut entdeckte Schmidt (1872) in der Blutflüssigkeit das "Gerinnungsferment" Thrombin, durch dessen weiteren Erforschungen in den folgenden beiden Jahrzehnten den Grund zu der heute als klassisch bezeichneten Blutgerinnungslehre (Morawitz, 1905) gelegt wurde.
