Añadir al carrito1681, 14 lines on paper sheet approximately 300 x 175 mm, 12 x 7 inches. It refers to a payment to Thomas Povey of twenty-five pounds, being one quarter of his "fee or sallary" for services to His Majesty. It is signed by Edward Hyde, Sir John Ernle, Edward Dering, Sidney Godolphin, and Sir Stephen Fox who possibly wrote the document. Thomas Povey FRS (1613/141705) was a London merchant-politician. He had a house in Lincoln's Inn Fields which was famous for its elegance and the ingenious arrangements of its wine-cellars. There he dispensed generous hospitality, John Evelyn and Samuel Pepys were both frequent guests (DNB). Some minor restoration to the sheet with partial loss to 2 words and slight loss to the lefthand margin at the bottom, patchy pale browning and staining. This document was taken from an old card folder containing items connected with Samuel Pepys. The folder was put together by Willam Upcott (17791845) a well known librarian and author, who collected large quantities of books, manuscripts, letters and other ephemera. See Margaret Willes, The Curious World of Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn, the Introduction for information on Upcott. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST.
