The author, Orson Squire Fowler (1809-1887) was a phrenologist and lecturer. He also popularized the octagon house in the middle of the nineteenth century. Orson wrote and lectured on phrenology, preservation of health, popular education and social reform from 1834 to 1887.

Frontis illustration with tissue-guard is a portrait of the author. Plain brown wrapper on coverboards may be original to the book. The wrapper is split down the front spine fold. Richly illustrated with engravings; 100 illustrations in total. One illustration (Bacchus on pg. 206) was neatly cut out from book by a previous owner, but is laid inside the book. Edge of text block is marbled. On the title page there is a stamp advertising the services of Prof. F. L. Cavanagh, who provided phrenological examinations. No publisher or location of publisher is indicated. Size: Sm 4to (9" to 11"). 1052 pp.
