This is "Australia: The making of a Nation" by John Foster Fraser, published for the Bay View Reading Club in Detroit, Michigan by Cassell and Company This was the Third Edition, issued in 1911. John Foster Fraser was an English travel author who gained public celebrity for doing a bicycle trip around the world with two friends, Samuel Edward Lunn and Francis Herbert Lowe. On Rover safety bicycles they rode over 19,000 miles in two years. They crossed through 17 countries and three continents. The journey was immortalized in Fraser's book, "Round the World on a Wheel" (1899). Australia was one of the countries he visited, although at a later time than his chronicled world tour; and so this book is a further enlargement of his travels - devoted entirely to "Down Under" - including Tasmania. Fraser addressed the Foreword of his book "To the People of Australia" ; ? This is a book about you - the impressions, the investigations, and the conclusions of a world-wanderer who spent a few months in your midst. For years many of you wrote to me:"You write books about America, Canada, Russia, Siberia and other lands; why don't you come here and tell the world about us? Poor condition. Bound collection of seven U.S. Department of Agriculture, Division of Biological Survey bulletins. Hardcover; H 22.5cm x L 15.25cm. Quarter-leather binding. Front and rear boards detached; boards scuffed and stained with leather corners worn. Most of spine's surface leather lacking with underlying paper back-strip exposed but with gilt spine title BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA still legible. Marbled endpapers; shallow fore-edge chipping to front free endpaper with larger loss to rear free endpaper. "Compliments of William W. Wilson, M.C." stamped on front flyleaf (William W. Wilson, 1868-1942 was a U.S. Representative from Illinois serving in Congress from 1903-1913 and 1915-1921). Text block still firmly bound. Some moisture staining at top margins of leaves at book's center but otherwise pages are clean. B/w illustrations inset amongst text of most of the bulletins. Account of a journey east on the new Trans-Siberian Railway in 1901 made at the invitation of Henry John Palmer, editor of the Yorkshire Post and president of the Institute of Journalists. Fraser sees the Siberia of convicts and prisons passing away and the new land becoming "the ultimate great food-producing region of the earth". Nerhood 480.

12mo, 4 pp. 61 lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. An impressive letter applying for work. He does not expect Massingham (addressed as 'W. H. Massingham') to remember their meeting 'in the Lobby' when he was 'chief reporter on The Sun', while at the same time holding 'a Parliamentary engagement on the staff of the C. N.' Gives details of his subsequent employment, including joining the editorial staff of the 'Manchester Guardian' ('principally to look after their weekly paper which was in a sad way. I prolonged its existence rather than gave fresh life to it & in May last it died.') For the last four months he has been 'in Asia Minor & Syria seeing something of the disturbed country - an interview of mine with Sir Phillip Currie is to appear in the English Illustrated - & getting material which I hope may be useful to me'. He is 'now back in London extremely anxious to get back in the Press Gallery'. A 'descriptive writer' is more than he can hope for, and he would like to 'secure a sessional engagement on the reporting staff of the Daily Chronicle'. He is a 'verbatim note taker' and 'a good summary writer', and is 'well acquainted with Parliamentary work'. Names six individuals 'who know what sort of journalist I am', including Clement Shorter and T. P. O'Connor. As 'a young man & a Radical', he would 'prefer the Daily Chronicle, especially as it is also a literary paper'. Being 'a magazine writer' does not prevent him from 'being a reporter'. He is 'no novice to Parliamentary reporting for it is only eighteen months since I left it'.
