Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Pages are clean and intact except for slight darkening on front and back, light age toning, slight wear to edges and corners, and an ink stamp from the Colby University Library on front. A Very Good copy. This is a collection of an anniversary sermon an…d a farewell sermon that were originally given at the Hollis Street Church in Boston, Massachusetts on March 3, 1847 and September 19, 1847, respectively, by David Fosdick, Jr. who served as minister of that church from 1846-1847. In a brief Preface, Fosdick acknowledges his departure as pastor of the Hollis Street Church, a Unitarian church as the time. He combats criticism made against him and Unitarianism. In the Anniversary Sermon (Pages 5-13), Fosdick begins with a verse from Scripture, 2 Corinthians 2:16 in which Apostle Paul makes an exclamation about the gravity of what it takes to be a Christian minister. Fosdick speaks more about his time as minister and acknowledges his shortcomings. He says that the sufficiency of ministry work comes only from God. In his Farewell Sermon (Pages 14-34), Fosdick begins with the verse, Jer. 14:19, which centers upon a search for peace and healing that is met only with hardship. Most of this sermon is Fosdick's elaboration of the numerous problems in his ministry. He says that the Hollis Street Church had ongoing problems preceding his pastoral charge. He also that members of his congregation may have been unhappy with him. Fosdick mentions other obstacles during his ministry such as negative public press, the Church apparently having the negative reputation of being "aristocratic," dwindling numbers in church membership, and financial debt. Fosdick says that his congregation accepted his resignation. Hollis Street Church was founded in 1732 as a Congregational church. Its denomination changed to Unitarian in about 1800 and remained a Unitarian Church until 1887 when it merged with the South Congregational Soicety of Boston.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a dissection of an important debate from the 19th century United States, where various reform movements clamored for societal change. The author, a religious leader of the time who identifies as a well-wisher of true Reform, critically examines the methods of some re…formers. He argues that although their aims were in many ways noble, their strategies were counterproductive, and the intemperance of their rhetoric was an obstacle to meaningful change. He advocates for temperance in all things, not merely in one's consumption of alcohol but also in the pursuit of social change. By analyzing the approaches of abolitionists, prohibitionists, and other groups of reformers, the book presents a nuanced perspective on the complexities of social change and underscores the necessity for thoughtful, rational, and compassionate approaches to societal issues.
