Folio 320 pages : illustrations ; 35 cm OCLC 3597185 ISBN 9780883653944, 088365394X ; LCCN 73151624 LC QK50 .P47 1972b Dewey 582.13 ; light green cloth, in color pictorial dustjacket ; This magnificent book will enable readers the world over to identify an enormous number of flowers.Flowers from every continent have a place within these pages. The text introduces the major plant families of the world, arranged in alphabetical order. The principal characteristics of each family are given and then a selection of genera and species described and illustrated. Within this book the author, Frances Perry, tells the botanical, horticultural and historical story of thousands of flowers. .with lively historical anecdotes, enthralling accounts of how many familiar plants were first discovered and popularized, and stories about the origins of their names. The paintings, which are botanically accurate to the smallest detail, make this a very beautiful book.with full colour paintings on every page. ; For this book, [Leslie Greenwood] felt that it was essential to paint his subjects from real life so that he could record true colours and accurate details, and indeed his endeavours to obtain live specimens were remarkable. Not only has he sought out rare species in gardens and hothouses all over Britain, but he has had many flowers flown to him as living specimens from as far afield as Singapore, Sydney and Perth, and South Africa. The many years painstaking work that Mr. Greenwood has put into his work are reflected in the excellence of his paintings. he has acquired an extensive knowledge of his subjects which makes them not only vivid and beautiful but botanically accurate. ; FINE/FINE.
