Ce volume rare renferme d'assez nombreux articles et mémoires de neurologie, dont les plus novateurs sont les suivants : 1°). ITARD (Jean Marc Gaspard). Mémoire sur quelques fonctions involontaires des appareils de la locomotion, de la préhension et de la voix. Ce mémoire, qui n'a pas fait l'objet d'un tirage à part, occupe les pages 385-407 de ce volume. Jean Marc Gaspard Itard (1774-1838) est à la fois l'un des fondateurs de l'otologie moderne et un pionnier de la psychiatrie infantile. Il rapporte ici 10 observations, personnelles ou tirées de la littérature, de patients présentant des "mouvements involontaires". Parmi celles-ci, on trouve deux observations de ce qui deviendra le syndrome de Gilles de la Tourette, après l'individualisation et la description magistrale (60 ans plus tard) de cette affection par le brillant élève de Charcot. L'une ces deux observations rapportées par Itard, et qui sera reprise par Gilles de la Tourette, est celle, devenue célèbre, de la marquise de Dampierre (Mme de D). Elle est considérée comme la première description médicale connue de ce syndrome et comme l'une des plus caractéristiques parmi celles publiées au XIXe siècle, avec ses tics moteurs et verbaux caractéristiques. BOUILLAUD (Jean-Baptiste). Recherches cliniques propres à démontrer que la perte de la parole correspond à la lésion des lobules antérieurs du cerveau, et à confirmer l'opinion de M. Gall, sur le siège de l'organe du langage articulé (Mémoire lu à l'Académie royale de Médecine, le 21 février 1825). Ce mémoire occupe les pages 25-45 de ce volume. Bouillaud est le premier à assigner aux lobes frontaux le siège du langage articulé, sur la base d'arguments scientifiques, anatomo-cliniques ; il sera pratiquement le seul à défendre cette idée jusqu'à la publication de Broca en 1861. Il fut notamment contredit par Andral et par Flourens. Bouillaud distingue pour la première fois deux types d'aphasie (expressive et amnésique). Il formule clairement ce que l'on appellera la "double dissociation", principe qui sera à la base de la neuropsychologie. Jean Baptiste Bouillaud (1796-1881) sera reçu premier à l'agrégation en 1826 (l'année suivant ce mémoire) et deviendra en 1832 professeur de clinique médicale à la Charité à Paris, dont il fut l'un des plus grands cliniciens après Corvisart.
