Romuald Hazoumè: The Fâ Series presents a significant yet little-known body of work by one of Africa's most celebrated artists. Romuald Hazoumè's large-scale canvases are based on his dedicated study of Fâ divination, a centuries-old knowledge system that originated among Yorùbá-speaking communities in Nigeria, where it is known as Ifá. Its practice has since extended elsewhere in West Africa including the Republic of Benin, where Hazoumè is based, and to the diaspora. Hazoumè's research on Fâ in the early 1990s was revelatory, radically shifting his understanding of art and creativity. The resulting canvases draw from the visual lexicon associated with Fâ, referencing its sacred knowledge through symbols and glyphs. Described by the artist as his cultural anchor, these intimate, esoteric works speak to the generative potential of the artistic process in an ongoing quest for knowledge. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Neuberger Museum of Art, this fully illustrated catalog is the first extensive examination of Hazoumè's Fâ series. In an introductory essay, exhibition curator Christa Clarke discusses the evolution and significance of the series within Hazoumè's larger creative practice. An accompanying essay by Didier Houénoudé, professor of art history at the University of Abomey-Calavi in Cotonou, Benin, describes the divinatory process and offers an in-depth reading of Hazoumè's canvases.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Small 4to. Tan cloth spine with black lettering and blue paper over boards with gilt lettering. 198pp, (13pp). Frontispiece, full-page plates. Very good. Binding a tad rubbed and faintly edgeworn, but tight and internally near fine. Attractive first edition. Tipped to front flyleaf is the heavy stock 3¼" X 2" business card of E. Asbury Davis, this company's president and subject of Chapter IX ("E. Asbury Davis Becomes President 1932-1946"). In addition, tipped onto an inner flyleaf is a Typed Letter Signed from Charles P. Whitney, 1p, 8" X 6", Chicago, IL, 8 June 1922. Addressed to A.D. Sheridan. Near fine. On company letterhead, Whitney tells a client "we have added $2,000 fire insurance and $1,000 tornado insurance to your cabin at the Wausaukee Club." Boldly signed. Whitney was a principal of Critchell, Miller, Whitney & Barbour Insurance, an important Chicago insurance agency -- the relation between them and United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company is unclear, but an interesting addition nonetheless.
