This book contains the First, Second, and Fifth Editions in full, together with the textual variants in the Third and Fourth Editions, thus providing the reader with a complete rendition of FitzGerald's work on The Rubáiyát,over a period of more than 25 years. There are, in addition, a general Introduction by Laurence Housman, an essay on FitzGerald by G.F. Maine, FitzGerald's essay on Omar, the Notes to the Second Edition, which contains the largest number of quatrains (110), and a Glossary. The illustrations, of which there are twelve, were specially drawn for this edition by Robert Stewart Sherriffs." About the Author: The rubáiyát (the plural form of quatrain, or a verse unit of four lines) were written around 1120 by the Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet Omar Khayyám (1048?-1122). He left upwards of 1,000 epigrams on the transience of existence and the uselessness of mathematics, science, or religion to untangle the knotted meaning of life. The illustrator: Robert Steward Sherriffs (1906-1960) was a caricaturist and illustrator. He attended Edinburgh College of Art where he initially studied heraldic design in addition to fine art. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. The famous translation into English quatrains by Edward Fitzgerald of the classic verse by the "astronomer poet of Persia," edited by Persian scholar Reynold Alleyne Nicholson from the University of Cambridge. This edition is beautifully illustrated with a Frontispiece & 15 additional full-color,… full-page plates by artist Gilbert James. In 203 pages, including Note section in rear.The First Edition in this format from 1909 (First, Thus), this hardcover book has creamy off-white cloth-covered boards with elaborate, scrolling design in blue & green to front board & spine, gilt lettering to both, which is shiny & bright; rear board shows light mottled stains. Condition is VG: sewn binding is secure, but front hinge is cracked. Generally very clean, pages moderately tanned, commensurate with age. Former owner's lovely scripted name inside front cover with 1913 date; NO other writing/highlighting/underlining; not ex-lib. No DJ as issued. Flaws: foxing to most pages, though the plates are relative unscathed (different paper stock)--they do show the occasional spot or stain, however. Endpapers heavily foxed, as are the external fore edge pages & bottom page edges; top page edges in gilt, which is still bright, with the occasional rubbed area. Corners are all bumped & there is a 1" tear at the lower spine ascending up along the edge where it joins the front board.
