Methuen & Co, London 1926 First Edition 30pp Hardback Music Book. This copy is in fine bright, tight and unmarked condition. The unclipped dustwrapper is a trifle dusty and has some edge wear to the top but is still in remarkably well preserved condition for its age. E V Lucas was a popular and prolific author who could turn his hand to almost any subject with aplomb. He wrote knowledgably about Cricket, John Arlott considered his collection of press pieces to be the finest cricket writing he had encountered. He wrote humorous pieces for 'Punch'. He was born in Eltham, Kent into a Quaker family, and educated at Friends School in Saffron Walden. He worked first in a Brighton bookshop and then on a Sussex newspaper followed by The Globe; rising without university education to the Punch 'table' in 1904. He became a prolific writer, providing extensive content for Punch and a column "A wanderer's notebook" for The Sunday Times. From 1924 he was the Chairman of Methuen Publishers. He was responsible for A. A. Milne teaming up with E. H. Shepard for the Winnie-the-Pooh books. This did not stop him from penning a collection of children's poems entitled 'Playtime and Company' which was illustrated by E H Shepard. and published in 1925 a year after 'When We Were Very Young' the first of Milne's Winnie the Pooh books. This piece of music came from a substantial library amassed by Maude Beerbohm Tree and later added to by her daughters Viola (1884-1938 and Felicity (1894-1978) Helen Maud Holt (5 October 1863 - 7 August 1937), professionally known as Mrs Beerbohm Tree and later Lady Tree, was an English actress. She was the wife of the actor Herbert Beerbohm Tree and the mother of Viola Tree, Felicity Tree and Iris Tree. After early stage appearances beginning in 1883, Mrs Tree married and established a theatrical partnership with her husband, in which they appeared in revivals of classic plays and productions of new plays, first at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket and then at Her Majesty's Theatre. Her performances in serious roles were well received, but she was most celebrated for her work in comedy, from Shakespeare to new works by Wilde and others. After her husband's death in 1917, Lady Tree continued to act steadily for almost two decades more until towards the end of her life, in plays and some films, making her last stage appearance in 1935. He begins in conventional fashion, with a reference to 'Herman's countless friends', before continuing: 'As I write this there is in front of me part of a small collection of books I have each containing some personal inscription from its famous author. Among them is one from Herman. He had thought of me one evening, &, with his usual kindliness, he took a book from his collection, wrote in it, & brought it to me there & then. He spent most of that evening in my dressing room. - the last time I saw him. I am indeed proud to be called by him "my dear friend John"'. Roberts first appeared on stage in 1909. His first film was The Constant Nymph (1928). Other films were Night Train to Munich (1940) and Spitfire (1942). He also appeared in the BBC television series The Warden (1951). Finck's 'In the Shadows' was one of the last songs played as RMS Titanic went down.…

3pp., 12mo. In poor condition, aged and worn, with the two leaves of the bifolium separated. The letter begins: 'My dear J. McG. | Pardon me, but M. Delormel did not write "The Boulanger" March ("En Revenat de la revue") nor did he write "Père la Victoire" but I dont say he didn't publish them.' Finck attributes the first to 'M. Desormes (the Conductor of the Folies Bergere Paris up to the time of his death about a year ago)', and the second to 'Louis Ganne who composed "Lorraine" March, also that hackneyed Mazurka the name of which I forget for the moment which goes like this: - | [Finck has written a line of musical score here]'. In a postscript he states that 'The "Star" scintillator also erred thusly in the work that has gone.' The third page carries a humorous remark attributed by Finck to Cuvier, regarding 'the supposed definition of a lobster'. An extremely popular figure in London theatrical and musical circles, Finck was the musical director of the Palace Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue. His 'In the Shadows' was one of the last tunes played as RMS Titanic went down. …

The word 'Answered' is written at the head. Percy made his in Australia in the productions of J. C. Williamson. He toured America before settling in England. Finck's 'In the Shadows' was one of the last pieces played by the orchestra on the Titanic. …

Aged and worn postcard. Written in pencil, and addressed to 'The Mac Finck | 21 Heatherfield Pk | Willesden Green | NW'. Reads 'All right Sunny | See you soon. So busy. No time to Finck of ennyfinck for a week | Yours | GRS'. The image of 'MR. GEORGE ROBERT SIMS' on the front of the card shows a seated Sims pondering what to write with pen in hand and finger on cheek, seated surrounded by curios in what is probably his study. Finck's 'In the Shadows' was one of the last songs played while RMS TItanic went down.…

Finck's 'In the Shadows' was one of the last pieces played by the orchestra on the Titanic.…
