Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. Treiber, H., artwork on the first leaf. T. Fickenscher, probably the artist of the ornamental framing decoration on the second, but alternatively, the photographer of the 14 small photos on this page Ilustrador. First Edition presumed. Lovely promotion of a major Dresden-based manufacturer of bicycles and sewing machines -- and other products not featured in this celebratory publication. The drawn illustrations capture the romance and sheer delight the bicycle offered and lent a soft focus charm to the sewing machine as well. If the combination of the two products seems strange, the company, Seidel & Naumann, founded in 1868, was a major player in both fields, over the century and half of its existence, as it evolved its product list, was to become a leading German manufacturer of typewriters, among other things. Folio, 32 by 25 cm. Unpaginated, nine leaves, the first, a glossy leaf, printed on both sides, followed by eight non-glossy or matt leaves, printing only on rectos. Front chromolithographed paper pastedown has seven different images, arranged in a collage-like manner, with different sizes, overlaps, insets. The dominant image is of a couple cycling in a country setting on bicycles that are recognizably modern. Five of the other images are views, one of the company's large plant, the others, panoramic views of Dresden and the Elbe short nearby -- as to the latter, we are assuming that is the case, as we haven't identified the castles in the pictures. Notwithstanding the full color of the cover, within the illustrations are either rendered in blue and white or a brown/gray and white. The first leaf features calendars for 1898 and 1899, surrounded by a group of men and women out for a country ride and touches of Art Nouveau decoration. The next leaf has 14 small black and white photos of the inside of company's factory, with more traditional Rococo framing. Then come eight illustrated plates, four devoted to bicycles, four, to sewing machines, all with a slightly ethereal aura that glorifies the activity, with the people depicted of course young-ish and handsome and sometimes beaming with contentment. Each of these has a brief caption, rounded above and below the image, touting the company's product. This promotion is clearly scarce -- we could locate no other copies, with none listed on OCLC First Search, although other publications of the company are easily to be found, and to be expected given that it was such a large enterprise. Bits and pieces of Seidel & Naumann's diverse businesses survive to this day, but as an unitary enterprise, it doesn't exist as it had well into the 20th century. The business was at one time the largest German maker of sewing machines, but in the 1920s chose to concentrate more on bicycles. It stopped making bicycles in 1938 to devote itself to its budding typewriter business and other lines. The boards of the book have a gentle arch from top to bottom -- although we call it hardcover, the boards are of a thin card that is almost, but not quite, limp. The paper pastedown on the front has a few light stains or light soiling. The rear has some blistering. There is minor rubbing along the edges. The cloth spine has rust-colored soilings, and some rubbing. Interior-wise, there is one short closed tear and other indicia of use. Semi-Limp Hardcover. Cloth spine. Paper pastedown on boards.
