U. a. die österreichische Nationalbibliothek schreibt die dreibändige Abrechnung mit der Geschichte des Katholizismus Johann Jacob Fezer (1760 - 1844) zu: ein schwäbischer Jurist, Konsistorialrat, Bürgermeister seiner Geburtsstadt Reutlingen. Während eines vierjährigen Aufenthaltes in Wien: aufgeklärter Autor von kritischen Kommentierungen seiner Zeit (1786: 'Beweis daß Zahlheim als Opfer der Unwissenheit seiner Richter und durch Gewalt des Stärkeren hingerichtet wurde'), bereits vorher politischer Visionär einer demokratisch verfaßten Kommunalpolitik (1782: 'Über Wahlrecht und Wahlfreiheit der Reutlinger Bürger') und durchgängig entschiedener Streiter für die protestantische Art zu glauben (u. a. 1781: 'Uiber die Reliquien, Opfer, und Mirakelbilder'). Das Vorwort dieses 1. Bandes beginnt Fezer mit einem Glaubensbekenntnis: "Als unter dem Gewirre und Tumult von Einfällen der Barbaren und der größten Verworrenheit aller Verhältnisse alles Wissen und die Cultur der Alten untergegangen war, brach eine schauerliche Nacht über die Geister herein. In dieser schrecklichen Zeit schlich der Satan im Gewande selbstsüchtiger Priester umher und baute auf die Nacht dieser Zeit sein finsteres Reich, welches unter dem Namen Pabsthum noch bis heute besteht." (Bd.1, S. 1f.) Es folgt eine stichwörtliche Übersicht über die ersten 13 Jahrhunderte päpstlicher Vereinnahmung der Menschen und ihrer Welt. Erst in den Konzilien zu Konstanz (1414 - 1418) und zu Basel (1431-1449) sieht Fezer die Chance zu einer Wende. "Allein Alles was dort für die gute Sache der Kirchenverbesserung beabsichtigt war, ließ die Niederträchtigkeit der Päbste nicht zur Ausführung kommen. An ihrer Herrschsucht und Gier, an ihrem frivolen Weltsinn, an ihrer sittlichen Versunkenheit und Irreligiosität, an ihren Cabalen und Machinationen scheiterten die Bestrebungen der Kirchenväter".(S. 10) Und dann kam Luther. Und seine Bibelübersetzung: "die versteckt gewesene einzige Erkenntnisquelle christlichen Wissens und Glaubens, unter einem Gebirge eitler Priestersatzungen begraben, war wieder aus dem Staube hervorgezogen worden. Nach einem Zeitraume vieler Jahrhunderte wurde zum ersten Male wieder das reine Wort des Herrn verkündet." (Bd.1, S. 11) Die Folge: trotz Zensur, Bücherverboten, Inquisition und jesuitischer Agitation ließen sich die Menschen und ihre Herren nicht vom Weg zu Vernunft und Wissenschaft abbringen. Und diesen Zeitenwechsel beschreiben der zweite und dritte Band: im ersten geht es nach dem fulminanten Vorwort um den skandalösen Umgang mit Kirchenrecht und Glaubenspflicht bis ans Ende des 11. Jahrhunderts, der zweite beginnt mit dem Kapitel: "die Päbste im zwölften und dreizehnten Jahrhundert oder das Reich des Antichrists in seiner höchsten Blüthe". Nachdem im ersten Band noch die 'römischen Bischöfe' die Hauptakteure der abendländischen Umnachtung waren, sind es im zweiten und dritten Band die 'Antichristen'. Die Bilanz Fezers nach seiner Besichtigung von "254 römischen Bischöfen": "nicht ein einziger (verdient) hervorgehoben zu werden., der sich durch echte christliche Gesinnungen, musterhafte Sitten und durch ein redliches Streben, die Menschheit im Sinne des Evangeliums zu veredeln, ausgezeichnet hätte." Als Fußnote: eine Ausnahme. Papst Clemens XIV, Giovanni Vincenzo Antonio Ganganelli (1705 - 1774) war ein Franziskaner, der 1773 die Aufhebung des Jesuitenordens verfügte und wenige Monate später nach Ansicht Fezers vergiftet wurde. (Bd.3, S. 478) Der Wunsch des Autors zum Schluß: "Möge auch dieses Buch zum endlichen Verschwinden dieser Mißgeburt irriger Vorstellungen beitragen. Amen." Fezers Pamphlet ist mit sarkastischen Angriffen auf den Kaiser und das ganze Regierungssystem durchsetzt. Seine Tirade zählt zu…den wichtigsten Broschüren der Oppositionsliteratur des josephinischen Jahrzehnts. Über die Entstehung und Verbreitung seines in lateinischen Buchstaben gedruckten Pamphlets, das "gleich in der ersten Stunde in allen hiesigen Kaffeehäusern bekanntgemacht worden" war, sind wir gut unterrichtet. In der umfassenden Biographie des radikalen Aufklärers und späteren Bürgermeisters von Reutlingen, Johann Jacob Fezer (1760-1844), von Gerhard Junger (1988) wird dieser Titel aber nicht aufgeführt. ?
