Although a native of Indiana, Maurice Thompson, the author, generally best remembered for ALICE OF OLD VINCENNES, is said by the author of this article to have possessed a strong empathy for the southern way of life, as exemplified in his life and in his novels. Perhaps the strongest indication of his southern sympathies was his moving to Georgia and joining the Confederate cause, along with his brother, Will. But I remember the Thompson brothers as the authors of THE WITCHERY OF ARCHERY, 1878, which created a national craze for the sport which had been neglected for many years, and Maurice's book, BY-WAYS AND BIRD NOTES, 1885, which I found for a customer many years ago, and which was my introduciton to the Thompson brothers.…
