Añadir al carritoCouverture rigide. Condición: Très bon. Normal 0 21 false false false FR X-NONE X-NONE Precious first edition of this account of the "missions to Cochin-china, Tonkin, Siam, Cambodia. Very rare". (Chadenat, II, 4391). Cordier, Bibliotheca Sinica, 827 ; Brunet, Supp., 448. This publication follows the one published the same year concerning the travels made between 1673 and 1675. "It is the fourth volume by the same author. These bishops were: François Pallu, bishop of Heliopolis, de la Motte-Lambert, bishop of Beryte, and Ignace Cotolondy, bishop of Metellopolis. The latter died in 1662". The accounts of the missionaries contained in this book concern Cochin-china, Tonkin, China, Cambodia, india, Siam and Chiampa. "On the 18th of October 1675, the king of Siam granted a hearing to the three Apostolic Vicars then in Juthia: F. Pallu, P. Lambert de La Motte, and the bishop of Metellopolis. The bishops presented some letters from Louis XIV and Pope Clement IX to the king. This hearing, soon followed by several others, was the beginning of the relations that led to the sending of Siamese embassies to France, of French embassies to Siam, and to the treatises that arose from it. In 1676, Lambert de La Motte left again for Cochin-china. His stay was, according to the missionaries, the happiest time for the history of Catholicism in this country. We never saw so many people baptized in so little time, so many sinners converted, so many devotees sanctified. Back to Siam, he fell sick. He died on the 15th of June 1679 and was buried inside the church. Rome, that was unaware of his death, named him on the 1st of April 1680 general administrator of the missions to Siam, Cochin-china and Tonkin". « The French bishops in the East meanwhile kept the public informed about their activities in China, Indochina, and Siam through a series of published relations. From these works it became clear that the French mission was becoming increasingly dominant in East and Southeast Asia" (Lach-Van Kley, 3, 416). Very fresh and wide-margined copy preserved in its contemporary binding, of this interesting travel account very important for the knowledge of the Far East in the 17th century.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. (8) ff., 367 (1) pp. Bound in contemporary calf, gilt heraldic stamp on covers, gilt spine with raised bands worn with joints cracked but sound, head, foot and corners bumped. Lacking endleaves; illegible ownership inscription on lightly soiled title; very good overall. Rare first edition of this account of the state of Christianity in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam by rivals of the Jesuits. The Société des Missions Etrangères, a new apostolic missionary group established in Paris in 1660, was as a society of secular priests who devoted their lives to foreign missions but refrained from taking vows. Under the aegis of the Propaganda Fide, the Société des Missions soon became embroiled in conflicts over territory with the Jesuits. As a result of the patriotism of its priests, the organization's impact extended beyond evangelicalism into the political realm: in addition to facilitating a series of embassies and treaties, it also successfully established a more active trade between Indo-China, the Indies, and France. This Relation brought fresh information about the condition of the mission in different parts of southeastern Asia between 1666 and 1671. It consists of four parts, the first dealing with the mission in Siam and containing descriptions of amongst others Bourbon Island, Madagascar, and Mozambique, the second treating the situation in Cochin-China, the third the mission in Cambodia, and the fourth being devoted to Tonkin, including an account of the work of bishop Lambert de la Motte. (Lambert was a member of the Society's first expedition to the Far East, which had left Europe in 1660.) Fermanel de Favery (c. 1632-88), superior and director of the "S'naire pour les Missions Etrangères," signs the dedicatory epistle to Cardinal de Bo', and consequently Streit, Lach and Van der Kley ascribe authorship to him. The work was reprinted in 1680 and 1684, and an Italian translation, Relatione delle missioni de vescovi vicarii apostolici' alli regni di Siam, Cocincina, Camboia, e Tunkino, was published in Rome in 1677 and 1697. * Cordier I.826 (s.v. Cordier, bibl. Sinica, p. 827 ; Chadenat, I, 162, 1707, 3842. …
