Ferdinand Gonseth (1890-1975) was a Swiss mathematician, philosopher of science, and historian of ideas…. He is remembered for his contributions to the philosophy of mathematics, particularly his emphasis on the historical and contextual development of mathematical knowledge, and for founding the doctrine of l'idonéisme, which influenced 20th-century discussions on the epistemology of mathematics and science. This is the first edition of Gonseth's major philosophical work, in which he addresses the crisis in the foundations of mathematics. The text is organized in eighteen densely argued chapters, beginning with the paradoxes of language and the construction of reality, and proceeding through the nature and foundations of geometry, arithmetic, and logic. Gonseth critically examines antinomies and the structure of formal systems before presenting a detailed exposition of the axiomatic method. The volume concludes with a discussion of l'idonéisme, Gonseth's original philosophical doctrine proposing that mathematical and scientific concepts are neither purely a priori nor purely empirical, but constitute continually improving, contextually adequate approximations of reality.
