First edition, later issue. Collaborative romantic melodrama which tells the story of two orphans who triumph over ignorance and poverty and ultimately marry. Portions of the story, especially Mrs. Praed's section, "Some Evidence of Alfred Curran, News Paper Reporter, Concerning a Pair of True Lovers," are criminous. The tale appears to have been intended for young readers as the publisher's catalogue is a list of illustrated gift and prize books. Hubin (1994), p. 25.
