This book analyzes the economic impact of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Illinois Waterway on the Chicago metropolitan area and on parts of northern Illinois. It assesses how the industrial landscape of Chicago and surrounding Illinois was shaped by transportation innovation from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. The opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway to ocean-going vessels and the improvements made to the Illinois Waterway were expected to bring new economic opportunities to the already thriving region. This book investigates the growth and developmental trends of Chicago's industrial and commercial sectors dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, and uses that information to evaluate what the new waterways would add to the established economic activities of the region. The author notes that while the Seaway and Waterway improvements will positively impact the region, their direct benefits will be minor compared to the total economic activity of metropolitan Chicago. However, some industries will benefit significantly from the new access to raw materials and markets, while others may see less benefit from the increased accessibility of Midwestern markets to foreign manufacturers. Despite the measured economic impact of the waterways, the author contends that the indirect benefits of improved transportation will be a major boon to the region. As water transportation becomes more competitive with land transport media, freight rates on all competing media will decrease or increase at a lower rate than other industrial costs â" a development that will foster the economic growth of the entire region.
