First edition of a remarkable atlas, published as part of the zoological reports of the Austrian Novara expedition (1857-1859), the first official scientific circumnavigation of the globe undertaken by the Austrian Empire. The expedition, conducted under the command of Commodore Bernhard von Wüllerstorf-Urbair (1816-1…833), carried a team of naturalists whose work was coordinated by the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna. Over the course of the voyage, vast zoological, botanical, and ethnographic collections were assembled, greatly enriching the imperial museums and forming the basis for an extensive series of scientific publications published between ca. 1861 and 1875.The present work is devoted to butterflies and moths and represents one of the most important entomological publications of the 19th century. It comprises 139 finely executed lithographic plates depicting nearly 2500 specimens of butterflies and moths from across the world. These plates were drawn and engraved by the distinguished German entomologist and artist Peter Carl Friedrich Geyer (1802-1889), whose illustrations are notable for their precision, clarity, and aesthetic refinement.These three volumes together, issued from 1865 to 1875, comprise the "II. Band II. Abtheilung" of the zoological volumes of the reports of the expedition. Before publication, the project was planned to include both butterflies and moths, so the first three parts were issued under the general title Lepidoptera, with subtitles for Heft I-III, and without additional preliminaries. The plates for moths appeared later in Heft IV-V (1874-1875), but the accompanying detailed scientific text was never completed. As a result, the text of parts I-III was reissued: the original part titles were removed, replaced with a new collective title (Rhopalocera . Text), along with a series title-page (Reise der österreichischen Fregatte Novara, not present here), a new foreword dated May 1875, and a table of contents. The publication dates in the plates themselves show a gap between plate 107 (1868: the last of part IV) and 108 (1872: the first of part V). By then it had become clear that the detailed text on moths would not be produced, so each of the 33 plates of part 5 is preceded by a single letterpress leaf with brief information about the moths depicted.The edges and corners of the boards are scuffed.
