Edition originale.Né à Neuss, le peintre et dessinateur Fedor Hoffbauer (1839-1922) vint se fixer à Paris en 1851, et fut naturalisé en 1873. Il était connu en son temps pour sa série de vues de Paris, exposées sous forme de grande toiles dans un diorama aménagé en 1889 sur les Champs-Elysées (au théâtre Marigny), appelé le "Diorama de Paris à travers les âges". Hoffbauer en tira ensuite un livre illustré, Paris à travers les âges, montrant l'évolution des paysages parisiens depuis Lutèce jusqu'à son époque, qui demeure son ouvrage le plus connu. Two red leather labels with gilt short title and volume number pasted on the spine. Gilt head. Marbled endpapers. French text. Double column text with red border and wide margins. Text blocks age toned around the edges. Pages are clean and unmarked. Bindings are strong and square. The boards and spines are worn and rubbed. The volume label of volume I has had all the gilt rubbed off. Edges worn through in places. Some scratch marks in the marbled paper of both volumes. Overall a handsome set of copies that are whole and bright in relatively good condition.
