La relazione tra epica e potere è il tema delle ricerche staziane dell'autrice del volume, che sviluppa una riflessione su forma e ideologia della Tebaide, incentrata sul punto di svolta e sulla conclusione del poema: da qui nasce questo libro, che offre una lettura della Tebaide come discorso sul potere e uno studio del suo disegno epico come risposta a una crisi e come proposta, ideologica e poetica. Il rapporto fra generi e potere è al centro della riflessione: la novità della Tebaide si coglie nel confronto con la tradizione epico-tragica e con le forme in cui epica e tragedia, in Grecia e a Roma, hanno affrontato il tema del potere ed elaborato l'esperienza dell'assolutismo. Il disegno spezzato del poema, la climax negativa e il nuovo corso del racconto tra undicesimo e dodicesimo libro vengono messi in relazione con l'epos di Lucano e con la tragedia di Seneca e sono letti come un ripensamento in termini letterali, culturali e politici attuali delle tragedie attiche sul mito tebano. Epica del nefas, la Tebaide inscena una provvidenza assente e fa sua la poetica della tragedia come memoria del male, ma insieme condivide col genere tragico la proposta di modelli etici e politici, in una tensione irrisolta fra esemplarità e pessimismo.
