René GRUAU (Rimini, 1909-2004), d'origine italienne, de son véritable nom Zavagli Ricciardelli Comte Delle Caminate. Très jeune il entame une carrière d'illustrateur de mode avec Lidel en Italie, puis Fémina, Marie-Claire, L'Officiel de la Couture, Vogue, Harper's Bazar, Flair, et une longue collaboration avec "International Textiles". Dès 1947 il se lance dans la publicité et l'affiche avec des campagnes phares pour "Rouge Baiser", les "Bas Scandales". Il réalise pour son ami Christian Dior la campagne pour Miss Dior et ce fut le début d'une longue collaboration. Son style se manifeste, selon son expression par "la simplicité graphique", le jet de son trait et l'élégance dont le sujet principal est la femme. Ce qu'il exprime "j'aime les femmes et mon oeil est amoureux d'elles". ("Gruau" de Gilles de Bure, Herscher 1989). De nombreuses expositions lui furent consacrées, dont une rétrospective, en 1989 au Musée du costume, Palais Galliera et en 2010-2011, une exposition lui fut consacrée à la Somerset House de Londres.
