Born in Pleasington, Lancashire, he was educated in Belgium and at Ampleforth College in Yorkshire. Initially trained as an architect, Railton shifted his focus to illustration after his early drawings gained recognition. His career took off when his illustrations of a railway accident were published in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News in 1881. He later moved to London, where he became renowned for his intricate and atmospheric depictions of architecture and landscapes, often characterized by broken lines and fine detail. Railton illustrated numerous books and magazines, collaborating with prominent authors like Thomas Hood, Oliver Goldsmith, and W. Outram Tristram. His works included travel guides, literary classics, and architectural studies, such as Coaching Days and Coaching Ways (1888) and The Inns of Court and Chancery (1893).
